The Pitt, a new medical TV Show that will feel like old times
If you feel you are watching ER or 24, it might not be a complete coincidence
The Pitt is a new Max (former HBO) 15-episode show on Max. Created by R. Scott Gemmill, you might feel some familiarities with his previous work ER. I was very young when this show was out but I know of it legacy into medical drama and it launched George Clooney and Julianna Margulies into stardom.
First, The Pitt is a medical drama, it's also produced by John Wells and it stars Noah Wyle, one of the main stars on ER. He plays Dr. Michael Robinavitch but everybody calls him Dr. Robby.
There is something really captivating about this show, is that every episode shows one hour each of the 15-hour shift (starting at 7AM) this medical is on in an emergency department in a hospital in Pittsburg, United States. This premise might remind you of the show 24 which I loved, that also tackled hour by hour in each of its 24 episodes per season.
This structure drew me back to the way classic drama tv shows were made, and having a new episode per week (instead of the drop Netflix and such has accustomed us to) made me have a positive blast from the past.
The reviews from the medical field are very positive about the show's accuracy and also with dealing with lack of resources, staff shortages, overcrowding and PTSD after COVID.
I don't want to spoil you with details but here are a few things I love about the show:
📺 The very charged energy between Dr. Yolanda Garcia (played by the stunning Alexandra Metz) and Dr. Frank Langdon (played by Patrick Ball, who looks like a younger and more gorgeous Ian Somerhalder). Whenever they are in a scene together, YOUR SKIN FEELS IT
📺 The banter between Dr Robby and his charge nurse, Dana Evans. Played by Katherine LaNasa (remember the short-lived show Satisfaction? Her voice is beyond!), Dana is so clever and intuitive. I love how medical shows always confirm that nurses rule hospitals!
📺 There are several doctors on their first day at the job on this episode (might remind you of that first season of Grey's Anatomy with all the rookies who are now our oldies... or dead!) but the one doctor I find the most endearing is Dr. Melissa King (played by Taylor Dearden), a second-year resident. She is so so so awkward and I relate because I feel I am as awkward at her. The way she rejoices at diagnosing illnesses not understanding how overwhelming it might be for the scared patient hearing it... I completely understand her. And love when she is on my screen.
My husband is very particular about the shows he watches (he gets easily bored from long season and long run shows, favouring fast paced miniseries or the British format shows), and he is loving this one as well. Which is nice to have a show to watch together too. Here are a few we watched together in the past.
The last episode drops this week on April 10 and I cannot wait. Thanks to
for the tip to start watching it!Disclaimer: as this is a Max show, be ready for hard core & explicit scenes. IYKYK.
